IEW 101: All Things Fun & Fascinating: Expository Writing

Using the Institute for Excellence in Writing (IEW) technique of teaching structure and style, this 24-week course develops composition and grammar skills while students write about humorous characters and fascinating creatures. Class is an introduction to the IEW technique and is meant for beginning students, or students needing an IEW refresher. Weekly homework and parental help with editing and revision will be required.

*Fall semester will cover IEW Units 1/2, 4, 6 & 8 (Key Word Outlines, Summarizing, Multiple Source Research, and the Basic Essay Model)

*Spring semester will have a brief review of Key Word Outlines and then cover IEW Units 3, 5, & 7 (Narrative Stories, Writing from Pictures, Poetry, and Inventive Writing)

At-home work: Class involves homework every week which includes writing, proofreading and editing. Daily writing is encouraged. Homework is due almost every week. Students will create a portfolio of their completed work. Estimated 2 hours of homework per week depending on the student. Graded assignments.

New this year: Students may take either the spring or fall class, or all 24 weeks.
